UHS Graduates Co-Author Book

Two graduates of Union High School, Bill Rogers and Kerry Branson collaborate on a book.

September 27, 2023

Two Union High School graduates, Kerry Branson Class of ‘69 and Bill Rogers, Class of ’72 put their heads together and came up with an exciting book titled, “Descendants of Evil”. Kerry came up with an idea for a book last summer at the class of ‘72 reunion. Rogers, who writes under the pen name of Malcolm Tanner, was excited with the prospects of the story. From there, they almost immediately began the process of outlining what the book would be about. Here’s the back page blurb from the book:

During the Cold War, the CIA recruited ex-Nazis, including war criminals, as counter espionage agents to combat Communist infiltration. As the Cold War ended, some ex-Nazis became embedded in American communities and were forgotten. The U.S. public became aware of the atrocities committed by many of these individuals in Europe. This led to the creation of the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) and ‘Operation Revoke’ to expose these descendants of evil.

The mission had been kept secret to avoid interference from other intelligence agencies. An experienced ‘Black Ops’ facilitator and Intelligence expert, Maximillien headed the operation. His hand-picked operative, Navy Seal Beau Deckland, became the point man, and a brilliant research analyst, code named Stephanie, rounded out the team.

The team discovers a group of elusive Nazis who had gained virtual control of a small town. The CIA and FBI discontinued efforts to subdue them. Beau Deckland enters the town and discovers a beautiful woman, Vivian, at the center of danger. He also uncovers a dark secret about the tragic loss of the town’s beloved doctor.

The odds of this mission’s success were, at best, uncertain. Would Beau, Maximillien, and Stephanie bring this brood of war criminals to justice? Beau is running out of time and the stakes are getting higher. Surrounded by evil, danger, and corruption, Beau would have to complete this mission while trying to protect the alluring Vivian and the citizens of the small community.

Kerry said, “I had the germ of an idea for this book and wanted to tell a story. Writing with an established author like Malcolm Tanner has given me the best chance to do that.” And the two began the process that has led to the release of their book on September 19, 2023.

Bill said, “Kerry had a great story and used a vivid imagination to craft the story. Passing ideas back and forth was fun and I think we can say we both enjoyed the process. I want people to realize that even as this is Kerry’s first book, it is clear he has a talent to write and his ability to come up with sequencing of events and characters was awesome.”

Kerry added, “When it came to character development, I wanted them to live on in another story and maybe someday, that will come to fruition. I wanted the characters to make the reader look into each of them with deeper perspectives.”

Author Bio for Kerry Branson:

Born in Washington, Missouri, Kerry is the oldest of nine children. Inspiration to write came rather late in life, at the age of 73.

Like Malcolm Tanner, he too had a high school English teacher who spoke and wrote eloquently and lit a spark in his imagination. Writing and speaking persuasively then became skills he sought to develop at a young age.

Obsession with the automobile compelled him to follow in his father's footsteps, and he went to work as a supervisor at one of the Ford Motor Company's assembly plants in Kansas City, Missouri. Factory work stifled his creative juices, so after a short time, he and his wife Babs moved from Kansas City back to Washington, Missouri, where they have lived since 1978.

This is Kerry's first effort at writing a book, and he is collaborating with old friend, Malcolm Tanner. Kerry says, “I had the germ of an idea for this book and wanted to tell a story. Writing with an established author like Malcolm Tanner has given me the best chance to do that.”

He intends to follow up this first effort with another that catches up with the main characters he created in Descendants of Evil. He says, “I want these characters to continue living and thriving as if they were my own children. In a sense, they are.”

Author Bio for Malcolm Tanner (Bill Rogers):

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Malcolm Tanner was inspired to write by his Union High School English teacher. He spent thirty-four years in education as a teacher, coach, principal, and finally a superintendent.  He and his wife Sandy retired to Table Rock Lake in Southwest Missouri.  He says, “It provides a great backdrop and setting for thinking and writing.” This is his sixth book, four in the Mike Parsons Series, and Tanner has started on the fifth. Malcolm has also written one stand-alone book, “Drowning My Suspicions.”, as well as co-authoring this book. His new series Hayes and Braxton Detective Series is currently released on Amazon as well. The first three books of the Mike Parsons Series are on Audible, and he plans to do the other Audiobooks soon.
